In Dorsoduro, Peggy Guggenheim took Palazzo Venier dei Leoni as her own personal Venetian residence and kept her private collection there. Today it is the home of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, one of the most important art museums in the world, which showcases European and American art from the first half of the twentieth century.
You only need to take a few steps to immerse yourself in beautiful Venetian art: close to B&B Dorsoduro 461, at the foot of the nineteenth century Accademia Bridge, you can visit the magnificent collection of paintings by the Venetian school in the Gallerie dell’Accademia, which spans from the Byzantine medieval period to the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococò.
Have dinner at the Zattere (rafts) along the Grand Canal on a summer evening or admire the view of St. Mark's Basin and S. Giorgo Island from the Punta della Dogana, the old customs checkpoint. The Fondamenta delle Zattere, a bank built in the 1500s to unload logs coming from the forests of Cadore via special platforms, offers a scenic stroll. Facing the Island of Giudecca and the Palladian Church of the Redeemer, it is lined with cafes, pizzerias, restaurants and ice cream parlors.
At the fork between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal at the Dogana da Mar (the former customs house), the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute stands out. Built as a sign of thanks for the end of the plague in 1630, this Baroque church is the star of the Festa della Salute (Feast of Good Health), a procession in which pilgrims cross a picturesque votive bridge to reach the church.
The Chiesa Anglicana di S.Giorgio (St. George’s Anglican Church), in Campo S.Vio, holds religious services in English, organizes weddings and baptisms and hosts impressive concerts.
